It is a brilliantly crafted commercial film that seamlessly weaves multiple sub-plots leading to an explosive finale. Writer and director Atlee has skillfully stitched together mass moments and elevations into a tightly woven screenplay. Right from the beginning, Jawan captivates the audience with its engaging narrative, leaving them on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating what will happen next.

Atlee’s expertise lies in building emotional connections with the audience and making them root for the journey of the leading hero. Despite its 2 hours and 38 minutes runtime, It manages to keep the viewers hooked throughout. The well-executed action sequences are purposeful and emotionally driven. Atlee flawlessly integrates the plot with high points, delivering whistle-worthy moments at regular intervals.

In this movie, Shah Rukh Khan shines as a larger-than-life character, exuding mass appeal. His character’s evolution and elevation are a dream come true for any Indian cinema hero, and this is where Atlee triumphs. From the impactful introduction scene to the heart-thumping hijack episode, the pre-interval block, the post-interval flashback, the robbery sequence, and the extended climax – Jawan is packed with memorable moments. The story and emotional depth captivate the audience in the first half, while the second half offers two of the film’s best mass moments, including the exhilarating robbery sequence.

Jawan offers more than what one might expect from a commercial film. It fearlessly presents strong anti-establishment statements through SRK’s character, adding depth and substance. The backstories of the female cast members, including Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Leher Khan, and Girja Oak, are seamlessly integrated, amplifying the emotional quotient. The grandeur of every frame in Jawan is awe-inspiring. Anirudh’s background score enhances the cinematic experience, elevating the mass moments to a whole new level. The score used for Vikram Rathore adds to the character’s aura. In short, Jawan is a vigilante film executed perfectly.

What Doesn’t Work for Jawan?

While Jawan excels in many aspects, it falls short in a few areas. As a tentpole entertainer, the film lacks that one quintessential chartbuster. Though “Challeya” stands out among the songs, a bigger dance number featuring SRK, surpassing the energy of “Zinda Banda,” would have added to the film’s overall impact. While the dialogues in the second half pack a punch, Sumit Arora could have delivered stronger one-liners to heighten the impact further.

The film could have benefited from a shorter runtime by omitting the “Farrata” song in the second half. The romantic track between SRK and Nayanthara escalates too quickly, lacking believability. The inclusion of comic undertones towards the climax slightly dilutes the intensity achieved in the preceding sequences.

Additionally, Vijay Sethupathi’s character, although well-performed, could have been better written with a stronger conclusion.

Performances in Jawan:

Jawan is undeniably Shah Rukh Khan’s show from start to finish. He delivers a performance that will be remembered for a long time, showcasing heroism, machoism, emotional depth, action sequences, and impactful monologues with finesse. While SRK carries the narrative as Azad, it is his portrayal of Vikram Rathore, the father character, that steals the show. Every scene featuring SRK as Vikram Rathore will undoubtedly be met with thunderous applause from the audience. Nayanthara makes an impressive debut in Hindi cinema. Her role as Narmada allows her to shine, especially in the first half, where she convincingly executes action sequences and shares a unique dynamic with the leading hero. Vijay Sethupathi’s portrayal of Kaali, the quintessential antagonist, is perfectly cast. Despite the character being decently written, Sethupathi elevates it on screen with his wicked smile and impeccable dialogue delivery. The supporting cast members, including Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Riddhi Dogra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Girija Oak, Lehar Khan, Aaliyan Qureshi, Eijaz Khan, and Sunil Sharma, deliver commendable performances, adding depth and nuance to their respective characters.
